Embraer Speeds Requirements Engineering and Prototyping of Legacy 500 Flight Control System

Embraer needed to translate high-level requirements into well-defined low-level requirements for the Legacy 500 fly-by-wire flight control system while meeting tight development and certification deadlines. To accelerate prototyping and requirements engineering, Embraer partnered with MathWorks and used MATLAB and Simulink along with Embedded Coder, Simulink Coder, and Simulink Coverage to model the system, aircraft dynamics, and supplier-facing requirements.

MathWorks’ tools let Embraer build a detailed model, run more than 1,500 automated, requirements-based tests to achieve 100% model coverage, and generate code for real-time testing and supplier implementation. The effort shortened development by at least six months, produced twice as many requirements with 50× fewer issues per requirement, smoothed supplier integration, and supported on‑time FAA and Brazilian certification.
