Ellio Develops Two-Wheel Drive E-Bike with Simulink and Model-Based Design

Ellio, a Belgium-based start-up, needed to accelerate development of a two-wheel drive e‑bike with an automatic, impedance-based gear system that responds to rider input. Facing a small team, limited funding, and a need for a rapid prototype to show investors, Ellio turned to MathWorks and its Model‑Based Design tools, notably MATLAB and Simulink, to model and simulate the drivetrain and control software.

Using MathWorks tools—including Simulink, Simscape (with Simscape Driveline and Simscape Electrical), Simulink Coder, and MATLAB—Ellio modeled the drivetrain and rider, generated production code, deployed a controller to a Raspberry Pi, and tuned parameters interactively during rides. The MathWorks-based workflow delivered a complete drivetrain model in three months, a controller prototype in one day, enabled on‑bike real‑time tuning, and now runs as the control software on Ellio production e‑bikes.
