EDP Renewables Develops Revenue Forecasting and Risk Analysis Tools for Wind Farms

EDP Renováveis faced unreliable, unscalable spreadsheet-based forecasting for its wind farms, where variable local wind speeds make revenue and risk projections difficult. Needing an automated, maintainable solution to link volumetric forecasts with power‑price forecasts, the company turned to MathWorks and its MATLAB platform and toolboxes.

Using MathWorks' MATLAB, MATLAB Compiler, and companion toolboxes (Database Toolbox, Econometrics Toolbox, Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox, Curve Fitting Toolbox, and Spreadsheet Link), EDP Renováveis built a Price Reporting System and a Portfolio Decision System that run daily, perform Monte Carlo simulations, and store results in their enterprise database. The automated workflows reduced run times from hours to minutes, integrate with IT as standalone programs, and improved risk management—enabling effective hedging that saved the company millions.
