Dongfeng Electric Vehicle Develops Battery Management System for Hybrid Electric Vehicles Using Model-Based Design

Dongfeng Electric Vehicle (DFEV) needed to develop a sophisticated battery management control system for its EQ6110 hybrid electric city bus under a tight 18‑month schedule, with a small team and strict ISO/TS 16949 and MISRA C requirements. To meet these challenges they used MathWorks’ Model‑Based Design approach and tools—including MATLAB, Simulink, Stateflow, Simulink Coder, Fixed‑Point Designer, and Embedded Coder—to accelerate development and enable early, continuous verification.

Using MathWorks tools, DFEV modeled the controller and battery plant, performed desktop, software‑in‑the‑loop and hardware‑in‑the‑loop tests, converted models to fixed point, and generated production code for the Freescale S12 ECU; calibration files (ASAP2) enabled on‑vehicle testing. As a result (with MathWorks support) a six‑engineer team completed the project ahead of schedule, generated 100% of the application code (over 100,000 lines) that met MISRA C, enabled design reuse for other HEV models, and helped deploy EQ6110 buses that deliver roughly 30% better fuel efficiency.
