DOCOMO Beijing Labs Accelerates the Development of Mobile Communications Technology

DOCOMO Beijing Labs, which researches and develops advanced wireless communications for 4G and beyond-4G mobile networks, faced lengthy, compute‑intensive development and validation cycles for complex signal‑processing and MIMO algorithms. To avoid slow low‑level coding in C/C++ and to run large Monte Carlo system‑level simulations across dozens of base stations and hundreds of devices, the lab adopted MathWorks tools, notably MATLAB and its Communications and Signal Processing toolboxes.

MathWorks worked with DOCOMO Beijing Labs to implement end‑to‑end transmit/receive chains in MATLAB and to scale simulations using Parallel Computing Toolbox and MATLAB Distributed Computing Server on a 32‑core cluster. The MathWorks solution cut development time by about 50%, reduced simulation runtimes from weeks to hours, enabled roughly five times more test scenarios, and supported hardware demonstrations such as an 8x8 MIMO OFDM system and multiuser MIMO for TD‑LTE.
