CNH Develops Intelligent Filling System for Forage Harvesters

CNH Industrial set out to simplify operation of New Holland FR9000 forage harvesters by automating trailer filling with a 3D camera–guided spout, a task made difficult by variable lighting, dust, different trailer shapes, and the need for rapid in‑field testing. To meet a tight deadline, CNH Industrial used MathWorks' Model‑Based Design approach with MATLAB and Simulink to develop and validate the control algorithms before deployment.

Using MathWorks tools (Simulink, Stateflow, Embedded Coder and vision/DSP toolboxes), CNH Industrial built a Simulink controller that processed 3D camera point clouds, was tuned in the harvester cab at 20 fps, and then generated production C code deployed to an ARM9. The MathWorks‑based solution halved development time, produced generated code that worked on first run, put the IntelliFill™ system into production on FR9000 harvesters, and earned a gold innovation award at Agritechnica.
