Clearpath Robotics Accelerates Algorithm Development for Industrial Robots

Clearpath Robotics, maker of the OTTO line of self‑driving vehicles, faced the challenge of speeding development of laser‑based perception, computer vision, fleet management, and control algorithms while analyzing and visualizing large, complex ROS datasets. The teams found ROS and C++/Python inefficient for rapid prototyping, data visualization, and hardware interfacing, so they turned to MathWorks and MATLAB (with Computer Vision System Toolbox, Optimization Toolbox, and Robotics System Toolbox) to streamline analysis, visualization, and sensor integration.

Using MathWorks' MATLAB and its toolboxes, Clearpath prototyped and validated lidar object‑detection and fleet‑management algorithms, imported rosbag logs to diagnose a faulty lidar mirror array, and automated braking and motion‑capture tests for detailed performance profiles. The MathWorks solution served as a golden reference for production code, cut data analysis time by up to 50%, improved customer communication through shared MATLAB examples, and accelerated incorporation of cutting‑edge research into OTTO SDVs.
