Chery Enables In-House Development of Engine Management System Software with Model-Based Design

Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., one of China’s largest passenger car manufacturers, needed to bring engine management system (EMS) software development in-house to reduce costs, speed delivery, and avoid dependence on third-party suppliers. To achieve this, Chery adopted MathWorks’ Model-Based Design approach and tools, including MATLAB and Simulink, to enable engineers with limited embedded C experience to model, simulate, and verify EMS functionality.

With MathWorks’ tools and support, Chery developed Simulink/Stateflow control and plant models, established requirements traceability, ran hardware-in-the-loop tests, and used Simulink Coder, Embedded Coder and Fixed-Point Designer to generate production code. MathWorks’ Model-Based Design delivered measurable impact: nearly $2 million saved per year, 60% of control design reused (halving development time), and more than 200,000 lines of defect-free generated code, with two EMS generations now in production.
