A MathWorks Case Study
Chalmers University of Technology faced the challenge of teaching mathematics and mathematical modeling to nearly 1,000 students a year across multiple disciplines and two universities (Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg) while preparing them for industry. To make coursework more engaging and relevant—and to give students easy access to industry tools—the department adopted MATLAB from MathWorks and moved beyond abstract “school problems” to real, applied assignments.
MathWorks worked with the department to integrate MATLAB throughout core and upper-level courses and to provide a campus‑wide license for student access, with tailored exercises in chemistry, bioengineering, architecture, and engineering. The result: improved interdepartmental collaboration, students gaining industry‑relevant modeling skills, and strong proficiency outcomes—Chalmers students use MATLAB across projects and competitions, and in a survey of 115 Formula Student teams the Chalmers/University of Gothenburg team was one of only four to self‑identify as expert MATLAB users.
