Cambridge Consultants Designs Emergency Ventilator in Six Weeks with MHRA Approval

Cambridge Consultants, a leading product development and technology consultancy, was asked by the UK Government to design a production‑ready, Class III software-compliant patient ventilator in just six weeks — a process that normally takes years. To meet this challenge they relied on MathWorks tools, including MATLAB, Simulink and Simscape, to drive simulation, physical modeling, and control development.

Using MathWorks’ toolset for simulation, rapid prototyping and hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) testing, a worldwide team of more than 200 people collaborated to design and verify the Veloci‑Vent™, an MHRA‑approved ventilator assembled from readily available parts and requiring only two sensors. MathWorks-enabled parallel development of electronics, pneumatics and software produced ISO 13485 and design certification in six weeks instead of years, with rapid iterations and HIL verification delivering a robust, minimal‑parts device without compromising patient safety.
