Cadmus Collects and Analyzes Energy Data in Near Real Time Using MATLAB and the ThingSpeak Internet of Things Platform

Cadmus, a North American energy-efficiency consulting firm, faced the challenge of measuring and evaluating energy use in homes and businesses in near real time rather than waiting months for recorded devices to be collected. To get open, accessible cloud collection and powerful analytics, Cadmus turned to MathWorks, using the ThingSpeak IoT platform together with MATLAB (and related toolboxes) to ingest and process onsite sensor data.

Using MathWorks’ ThingSpeak to collect temperature, humidity, battery and power-usage data every 1–5 minutes and MATLAB (with the Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox) to analyze, visualize, and develop predictive models, Cadmus rapidly deployed sensor networks and delivered client-ready insights. The MathWorks-based solution let a five-engineer team go from prototype to production in months, cut development effort by two-thirds, scaled a network from ~50 to 500 sensors in just over three months, and enabled Cadmus to seize new market opportunities and pitch services to utilities.
