A MathWorks Case Study
Broadcom needed to deliver a low-cost WCDMA (3G) add-on baseband processor (SPINNERchip) that handset makers could pair with existing 2G chips, but faced the complexity of translating WCDMA algorithms into hardware and a two-year time-to-market constraint. To meet this challenge Broadcom used MathWorks tools—primarily MATLAB and Simulink—for Model-Based Design to ensure the software design mapped closely to the eventual hardware implementation.
Using MathWorks’ MATLAB for algorithm development, analysis, and visualization and Simulink for system modeling, S-function blocks, and test-vector generation, Broadcom validated subsystems, partitioned architecture for ASIC implementation, and reused models across product releases. The MathWorks-based workflow cut development time roughly in half, produced a two-chip solution adopted by partners such as Infineon, and delivered measurable savings of $10–$20 per handset versus competing single-chip solutions and $2–$3 million in development cost savings per project.
