A MathWorks Case Study
Bilkent University's Simply Complex Lab, led by Professor Serim Ilday, sought to methodically understand and control the complex behavior of microscopic particles in fluid. Their challenge was to develop an experimental platform to induce, measure, and analyze particle aggregation patterns, a process requiring precise control of a laser, high-speed image capture, and extensive data processing. The lab utilized MathWorks' MATLAB software to manage this complexity and process the resulting data.
The solution implemented by MathWorks provided the critical software foundation for the entire project. The researchers used MATLAB to control the laser apparatus, collect images from the microscope, and perform all data analysis, including image processing, statistical calculations, and machine learning. This enabled them to demonstrate universal patterns across different particle types, with their findings published on the cover of Nature Physics. The work of MathWorks was integral to achieving these results, providing the tools to complete the loop between theory, simulation, and experimentation, and opening new research avenues in material science and biophysics.
