A MathWorks Case Study
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center set out to make MRI scans faster and clearer—particularly for challenging cardiac exams—because conventional MR imaging was slow and prone to motion blurring. To develop a safe, effective solution they turned to MathWorks, using products such as MATLAB and the Image Processing Toolbox to prototype and visualize advanced reconstruction methods.
Using MathWorks tools the team developed the SMASH parallel-imaging technique: they simulated scanner data, combined signals from multiple RF detectors, built reconstruction algorithms and GUIs in MATLAB (with Image Processing Toolbox support) and plan to deploy standalone tools via MATLAB Compiler. MathWorks-enabled development produced a two- to five-fold increase in acquisition speed, reduced programming time, and more informative, less motion-blurred MR images, especially for cardiac studies.
