Ather Energy Develops Electric Two-Wheeled Scooter and Charging Stations Using Model-Based Design

Ather Energy, a Bangalore‑based startup developing the Ather 450 intelligent electric scooter and public charging network, needed to deliver a high‑performance, fast‑charging electric two‑wheeler quickly with a small team and many unknowns (rider behavior, thermal and battery characteristics). To avoid lengthy physical prototyping, Ather adopted MathWorks Model‑Based Design—using MATLAB and Simulink along with toolboxes such as Simscape, System Identification, and Embedded Coder—to simulate and validate vehicle and charging‑station designs before hardware builds.

Using MathWorks tools, Ather built detailed plant and battery models, developed and tuned control and charging algorithms in Simulink/Stateflow, and generated production code with Embedded Coder for scooter and charger microcontrollers. The approach let them evaluate design alternatives in weeks rather than months, cut testing time by about 50% (from one month to two weeks), halve field‑issue turnaround, and accelerate deployment of the Ather 450 and its charging stations in Bengaluru and Chennai.
