Analytics Engine and Digital Twin Reveal Buildings’ Hidden Energy Costs

Clockworks Analytics helps MathWorks monitor the performance of its large, complex building systems at the Apple Hill campus. As MathWorks expanded its sustainability efforts, the company needed a way to spot HVAC issues quickly, reduce wasted energy, and maintain comfort across its facilities—something its staff could not do manually 24/7.

Using MathWorks and its MATLAB-based fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) analytics engine, Clockworks Analytics built a digital twin of the building automation system and continuously analyzed 30,000 HVAC points every five minutes. The solution flagged issues such as an exhaust system running unnecessarily over a weekend and other commissioning-related problems, helping MathWorks cut energy waste, avoid equipment wear, and reduce emissions; in one prior client example, Clockworks Analytics identified a valve problem that was wasting about $20,000 per month.
