Accelerating Development of a Diabetes Management System with Model-Based Design Q&A with Bigfoot Biomedical

Bigfoot Biomedical, a startup creating automated insulin delivery systems for people with type 1 diabetes, faced the challenge of designing a controller that works across widely varying human physiology while reducing reliance on costly, slow clinical trials. To accelerate development and knowledge generation, Bigfoot turned to MathWorks' Model-Based Design approach, using MATLAB and Simulink to model, simulate, and validate control algorithms before clinical testing.

MathWorks helped Bigfoot implement a “simulation factory” built on MATLAB and Simulink that supports test-driven development, source code management, automated builds, and continuous integration, and can run millions of cloud simulations. The resulting models have become core corporate assets, enabling code generation for implementation, advanced machine-learning analysis of system data, and a faster path to market through earlier, lower-risk validation—demonstrating measurable scale (millions of simulations) and faster knowledge generation with MathWorks tools.
