A 10-Day Dash to Build Robots That Fight COVID-19

Weston Robot, a Singapore-based robot developer, faced the challenge of rapidly designing robots to help mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus through disinfection and temperature monitoring. To meet this urgent need, the company used Model-Based Design with MATLAB and Simulink from MathWorks to accelerate their development process.

The solution implemented by MathWorks enabled Weston Robot to quickly model, simulate, and prototype three new robot variants in just 10 days. These included outdoor disinfectant-spraying robots, indoor UV-light robots, and delivery robots with temperature screening. The resulting robots, developed with manufacturing partner AgileX, were deployed in Italy and China, with the outdoor model capable of covering nearly 4 acres per charge. This rapid innovation allowed Weston Robot to provide essential tools for creating a safer environment during the pandemic.
