A Mather Economics Case Study
Mather Economics worked with a large philanthropic foundation to assess the broader economic effects of coastal restoration and risk reduction spending along the Gulf Coast. The foundation wanted to understand how major flood mitigation and wetland restoration investments could support employment, beyond their environmental and protective benefits.
Mather Economics analyzed economic performance data and built econometric models to estimate direct, indirect, and induced job impacts from proposed federal spending. The analysis found that restoration funding is positively correlated with regional employment, and under the moderate scenario Mather Economics projected 77,453 incremental jobs over 2012–2062, averaging 1,549 jobs per year. The $25 billion in funding was estimated to generate about 3.25 million additional employment years, with a cost of roughly $7,700 per employment year.
