Case Study: University Hospital Gent achieves full mobility and return to windsurfing with Materialise 3D surgical planning

A Materialise Case Study

Using 3D Technology to Help a Man Get Back on the Waves

University Hospital Gent treated Koen, a young champion windsurfer suffering from long-standing lateral compartment arthritis and a valgus deformity of the knee; prior ACL reconstruction and lateral meniscectomy had not restored his function. To plan a precise corrective osteotomy, Prof. Dr. Jan Victor at University Hospital Gent partnered with Materialise, using their 3D surgical planning tools and patient-specific surgical guides created from CT data.

Materialise generated a 3D model, co-developed the bi-planar oblique osteotomy plan with the surgeon, and manufactured guides that matched Koen’s anatomy and the chosen fixation plate. Using Materialise’s guides, the osteotomy was performed to the planned angles with pre-drilled screw holes aligning to the plate, resulting in accurate realignment that eliminated pain, restored full mobility, and enabled Koen to make a full recovery and return to windsurfing.
