A Materialise Case Study
LIFESAVER, a British company known for portable water-purification systems, needed a large visual prototype of its new community-centered LIFESAVER M1 for a high-profile launch in Malaysia on very short notice. Materialise was engaged to provide rapid 3D‑printing, assembly and finishing services, using its large-format Mammoth machines to produce parts that could be quickly and accurately assembled for the event.
Materialise modified the CAD files for manufacturability, printed the reinforced parts on Mammoth machines, and completed around‑the‑clock finishing and assembly so the prototype shipped in time for the April launch. The on‑time delivery enabled a successful unveiling and paved the way for production slated to start in August 2012; the M1 is expected to deliver up to 2 million liters of sterile drinking water to more than 42,000 people in rural Malaysia (30 L/min), integrating with rainwater systems without chemicals or a power supply.
