Case Study: Formula Group T cuts steering wheel weight from 400g to 250g with Materialise 3-matic

Steering the June Race Car to the Finish Line

Formula Group T, a student Formula Student racecar team, needed to reduce the weight of a steering wheel while keeping it functional, aesthetic and cost-effective for competition. They partnered with Materialise and used Materialise 3-matic to design a 3D-printed steering wheel called “June.”

Materialise applied 3-matic (including the Lightweight Structures and texturing modules) and its design and engineering services to integrate internal lightweight structures, honeycomb surface texturing and built-in controls, enabling rapid iterations and 3D printing to meet tight deadlines. The result from Materialise: the steering wheel’s weight was reduced from 400 g to 250 g, with improved grip, aesthetics and lower production cost.
