Patient Suffering from Gunshot Wound Gets 3D-Printed Shoulder Implant, and Her Mobility Back

Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Dijon treated Nathalie Dufaut Danjon, whose shoulder’s bony anatomy was destroyed by a gunshot wound and for whom standard implants were impossible due to severe humeral and glenoid loss. After many surgeons declined the case, Prof. Narcisse Zwetyenga and Dr. Brice Viard engaged Materialise for patient-specific 3D planning and a custom 3D‑printed shoulder solution (including the Materialise Glenius Glenoid Reconstruction System/implant design).

Materialise engineers worked hands‑on with the surgical team to design a reverse shoulder prosthesis with implants on both the humeral and glenoid sides and supported detailed preoperative planning. Almost a year after surgery the patient has regained very satisfactory articular mobility and is pleased with the outcome; short- and mid-term clinical results reported by Dr. Viard are very satisfactory, with bone ingrowth still under observation.
