Optimizing Stent Design with the Use of the Mimics Innovation Suite

IBiTech, a research team focused on fluid–structure interaction of endovascular stents, needed highly accurate 3D representations of real stents because actual geometry often deviates from manufacturer CAD after laser cutting, electropolishing and crimping. To perform realistic CFD and FEA virtual tests and to study expansion, balloon interaction and vessel impact, IBiTech turned to Materialise’s Mimics Innovation Suite to segment nano/micro‑CT images and reconstruct precise stent and delivery-system geometries.

Materialise’s Mimics Innovation Suite supplied combined automatic/manual segmentation, high-quality remeshing and export tools that let IBiTech reconstruct balloons, derive exact dimensions for parametric modeling (pyFormex) and prepare meshes for FEA/CFD. The solution enabled detailed virtual expansion verification versus CT reconstructions, analysis of flexibility and radial strength, reduced reliance on physical testing, accelerated design iterations and supported patient‑specific implantation planning—shortening time to market and improving stent optimization.
