MythBusters and Magics Making Homer Simpson’s Head

MythBusters needed to repair a very large STL file to create a full-size mold for Homer Simpson’s head as part of a 5,000‑pound wrecking ball experiment. They turned to Materialise and used Materialise Magics to prepare the data and get the model ready for mold-making.

Using Materialise Magics, the team merged files, fixed geometry, oriented and cut the model to produce watertight data; the mold was cut into eight pieces and 3D machined, then cast in rubber and assembled for the on-screen test. Materialise’s tools enabled successful fabrication of the replica, which when used in the experiment significantly reduced the impact on the house during the 5,000‑pound wrecking ball test.
