Materialise Contributes to Pininfarina Sintesi Concept Car

Pininfarina introduced the Sintesi concept car at the Geneva Motor Show to explore a radically new “Liquid Packaging” approach that rethinks car volume and passenger-centric layout. The futuristic shapes, translucent integrated interior and highly complex instrument panel ruled out traditional manufacturing, so Pininfarina teamed with Materialise for Freeform Manufacturing using stereolithography additive technologies to realize those design ambitions.

Materialise produced multiple stereolithography components for Sintesi — including the full-width semitransparent instrument panel, radiator, control panels, roof antenna, remote controller and roof light cover — printing the dashboard on a Materialise Mammoth machine (build volume up to 2150 x 700 x 800 mm) in a translucent PP-like epoxy (Poly 1500) with integrated webbing for strength. Materialise’s solution made Sintesi the first concept car to exploit additive manufacturing prominently, delivered the intended light-play and structural complexity, and demonstrated viable personalization and small-series/one-off production possibilities.
