LMT’s MRI-Compatible Incubators Get 33% Lighter with AM

LMT Medical Systems designs MRI-compatible incubators that let newborns and premature babies be transported directly from the NICU into the MR suite. To meet strict medical, electrical, and MRI-related material requirements while producing only 10 to 20 systems per year, LMT needed a way to make lightweight, compliant parts suitable for small-series production. They turned to Materialise for additive manufacturing support, using SLS and polyamide components.

Materialise helped LMT redesign key incubator components for additive manufacturing and produce them on demand with SLS, enabling flexible, series-ready manufacturing without large inventories. The result was a compliant, sturdy, and more lightweight system: the latest incubator design dropped from 45 kg to 30 kg, a reduction of 15 kg, while also allowing LMT to continue improving parts for even greater weight savings.
