King Tut Revealed through an Accurate 3D Replica

Staab Studios, led by model-maker Gary Staab, was commissioned to create a non-destructive, museum-quality replica of King Tut’s mummy for a National Geographic/Discovery Times Square exhibition. To meet the need for extreme anatomical accuracy and tight timelines, Staab Studios partnered with Materialise, using its Mimics Innovation Suite (plus 3-matic, Magics, e-Stage and Mammoth stereolithography) to convert CT scans into a printable 3D model.

Materialise’s Engineering Services generated a highly detailed digital replica in Mimics, hollowed it with 3-matic to cut resin use and build time, prepared a watertight file in Magics, and produced the part on its Mammoth SLA machines with e-Stage supports before shipping it to Staab Studios for color and texture finishing. The result was a museum-ready replica that preserved minute skeletal detail, met project deadlines, reduced material and print time, and—according to experts—was virtually indistinguishable from the original; the project was completed by Materialise and Staab Studios.
