Innovative Methods for Aortic Aneurysm Device Testing

Medtronic Endovascular, a global leader in medical technology that designs stent grafts for thoracic aortic aneurysms, needed benchtop test models that accurately mimic in‑vivo performance under challenging conditions. To meet this need Medtronic worked with Materialise and used the Mimics Innovation Suite to convert patient CT data into precise 3D anatomical models for test development.

Materialise’s Mimics Innovation Suite (with 3‑matic for model design) was used to segment scans, derive and statistically morph centerlines to 95th‑percentile geometries, design thin‑walled aortic models, and 3D print physical test rigs. The Materialise workflow produced standardized, patient‑based benchtop models that let Medtronic quantify device performance, identify edge‑of‑failure conditions, and create more robust stent graft designs—formalizing a repeatable five‑step method from imaging to measurable test metrics.
