Get into High Gear with Altair’s Optimized Race Car Brake Pedal

Altair, a technology and engineering company with deep expertise in topology optimization, faced the challenge of producing topology‑optimized race car brake pedals efficiently without the time‑consuming step of manually reconverting organic designs into CAD for conventional manufacturing. To overcome this, Altair partnered with Materialise and used Materialise 3‑matic to prepare optimized models directly for 3D printing.

Materialise used 3‑matic to smooth designs, remove artifacts and file errors, add thickness where needed, create rims, and apply functional textures for grip, eliminating the need for CAD redesign. The result: a pedal as strong as the conventionally redesigned part but 20% lighter, faster to produce due to no tooling and shorter design cycles, and ready for additive manufacturing—demonstrating Materialise’s impact on Altair’s automotive design workflow.
