Change the Focus with Panasonic

Panasonic wanted to give owners of its LUMIX GM1 compact camera a new way to personalize their device, pushing the technological boundaries of 3D printing to achieve intricate detail and very thin yet strong structures. To do this, Panasonic partnered with Materialise (and design studio WertelOberfell) to explore 3D-printed custom covers using Materialise’s high-resolution stereolithography capability.

Materialise produced the first range of custom LUMIX GM1 covers using adjustable-beam high-resolution stereolithography to balance speed and quality, then applied fine-texture paint and metal plating (copper and nickel) finishes. Materialise’s approach delivered highly detailed, accurate parts and enabled cost-effective small-series production, allowing Panasonic to showcase the customizable covers at Photokina.
