A Mastercam Case Study
Ogemaw Heights High School participated in the NASA HUNCH program, which challenged students to produce 50 precision parts for research on the International Space Station. Machining instructor Kyle Sisco tasked his students with handling the entire project, from planning to inspection. They used Mastercam’s Educational Suite to program and create the necessary toolpaths for this real-world manufacturing challenge.
Using Mastercam, the students developed and tested multiple toolpaths, utilizing the Verify and Backplot features to simulate and perfect their machining processes before cutting any material. This allowed them to produce 200 parts with a 100% inspection pass rate, far exceeding the initial order and impressing NASA officials. Mastercam provided the essential tools for the students to experiment, improve cycle times, and graduate as turnkey employees with valuable CAD/CAM skills.
