A Mastercam Case Study
Marcel Jordan, a woodworking artist and machinist, was challenged with creating the framework, or "buck," for a full-size 1967 Alfa Romeo model car. The project required him to cut and meticulously organize over 275 pieces of plywood. His primary difficulty was managing the complexity of the parts and modifying the design to allow for efficient machining without altering the car's outer profile, all while estimating accurate material costs and machine time. He turned to Mastercam Router software to tackle this task.
With assistance from his Mastercam Reseller, the solution involved using Mastercam's Geometric Nesting feature to keep all 277 parts uniform and organized. The software's toolpath options and tab parameters allowed Jordan to efficiently nest the parts on sheets of plywood and modify the internal clearances. This enabled him to cut the entire buck in 40 hours and deliver the perfectly fitting pieces, which the client assembled in a single day. Mastercam provided the essential tools for design, machining, and quality control from start to finish.
