A Mastercam Case Study
Dimensional Innovations, a design and production firm specializing in custom built spaces, was challenged to create a nine-story memorial for the Las Vegas Raiders that could withstand heavy winds, have a highly reflective finish, be fireproof, and weigh under 250,000 pounds. Using only 3D printing was impossible due to the extreme surface finish and timeline requirements. To achieve this, they turned to Mastercam CAD/CAM software to guide their machining processes.
The solution implemented with Mastercam directed a large-scale additive manufacturing machine to 3D print and then precisely machine 226 individual polycarbonate blocks using 5-axis milling to a tolerance of .005 inches. This combination of additive and subtractive manufacturing, facilitated by Mastercam's extensive CAD capabilities and toolpath management, enabled the efficient creation of the world's tallest freestanding 3D printed structure, successfully meeting all the client's strict parameters for safety, design, budget, and timeline.
