Calhoun Community College needed to prepare its machine tool technology students for the advanced 5-axis machining work common in the local aerospace and medical device industries. Their challenge was integrating these complex programming and CNC machining skills into a standard curriculum that already had to accommodate a wide range of student learning speeds. To address this, the college turned to Mastercam and its Mastercam Education Suite and Multiaxis products as a core component of the solution.

The solution involved creating a specialized Advanced Machining Professionals (AMP) co-op program. Partnering with Mastercam and local manufacturers, the college implemented a rigorous curriculum where students use Mastercam’s user-friendly, industry-standard software to learn multiaxis programming. The initial results have been highly successful; AMP students gain valuable 5-axis skills and earn an advanced degree, while local manufacturers on the advisory board are pleased and look forward to hiring these qualified graduates.
