A Masabi Case Study
Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) needed a convenient fare payment option for occasional riders who were less likely to buy a Clipper Card or monthly pass. In 2017, SMART turned to Masabi and its Justride platform to create SMART eTickets, a mobile ticketing app that would make buying and using train tickets simpler for riders across the Bay Area.
With Masabi’s solution, SMART launched mobile ticketing for train travel and later expanded it to include integrated ferry ticketing for trips into downtown San Francisco. The app also connects with Transit for trip planning and real-time information. Results were strong: ticket sales via the app increased by 146% between January 2019 and January 2020, mobile ticket activations rose by 17.8% from December 2019 to January 2020, and in February 2020, 20.3% of SMART trips connected seamlessly into San Francisco via the Golden Gate Ferry.
