Square, the payments and financial‑services company built to serve small businesses, faced a common challenge: sellers often waited days for funds or paid fees for instant deposits, and many struggled to keep business and personal expenses separate. To give sellers immediate, fee‑free access to earnings and a dedicated business card without requiring a new bank account, Square partnered with Marqeta to launch Square Card using Marqeta’s card‑issuing platform, tokenization, and Gateway JIT Funding.

Marqeta delivered a modern issuing solution—physical and instantly provisioned virtual cards, push provisioning to Apple Pay/Google Pay, real‑time webhooks, JIT funding for authorization controls, and program management including compliance and fraud services—integrated directly into Square’s app. Since launch, adoption has grown every quarter: in Q3 2020 sellers spent over $250 million on Square Cards, 50% of card users ordered a card in their first onboarding month, and Square reports increased customer lifetime value as sellers access and spend earnings within the Square ecosystem.
