U.S. Air Force Research Lab Creates MarkLogic-Based Data Platform to Make Safer and More Powerful Planes, Tools, and More

The U.S. Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) built HyperThought™, a scalable data management platform to make exabytes of simulation and test data discoverable and securely shareable for 700 scientists and thousands of external collaborators. AFRL faced data silos, difficult integration, inflexible tools, governance challenges and extreme data volumes (simulations could produce an exabyte in a month), and found early MongoDB prototypes lacked built‑in search, semantics, and true RDF expression.

AFRL replatformed HyperThought on MarkLogic to provide an operational data hub with built‑in search, semantics, APIs and enterprise security. The result was a 100x performance increase, tens of thousands of development hours saved, lower costs and redundancies, optimized research resources, and secure, faster collaboration with external partners.
