Springer Takes Control of its Online Content Delivery

Springer, a 160‑year‑old scientific and medical publisher, runs SpringerLink — an online platform hosting over 8.4 million documents and 169,000 eBooks. As online sales grew to represent two‑thirds of company revenue, Springer faced the need to bring its content delivery in‑house (ending an eight‑year outsourced arrangement), meet an 11‑month deployment deadline, and deliver sub‑second, scalable search and distribution.

Springer migrated SpringerLink to the MarkLogic database, enabling richer applications, simplified architecture, and an agile weekly release cadence. The new platform now handles about 2 million page requests and over 1 million downloads daily, generates 95% of Springer’s online revenue, loads twice as fast under peak traffic and runs key functions up to four times faster; user time on site rose ~33%, bounce rate fell by half, and multilingual, sub‑second search and image discovery were implemented.
