Case Study: Informatics Corporation of America achieves secure, scalable, near-real-time healthcare analytics with MarkLogic

A MarkLogic Case Study

Preview of the Informatics Corporation of America Case Study

Security, Scale, and Speed for Healthcare Big Data

Informatics Corporation of America (ICA) needed to build a health information exchange (HIE) that could ingest millions of disparate clinical records, support semi-structured and unstructured data, deliver near-real-time analytics for clinicians, and meet stringent HIPAA security requirements without degrading performance. The challenge was to design an architecture that scaled horizontally across many concurrent connections while keeping encryption and processing overhead affordable.

ICA implemented a distributed NoSQL database (MarkLogic) on Intel® Xeon® E5–based servers and used Intel AES‑NI–accelerated encryption with BitLocker to maintain strong, hardware-enhanced security at scale. The resulting CareAlign Exchange platform supports high-throughput, near-real-time analytics and easy onboarding of diverse EHR data, reduces encryption-related hardware costs, and is being used by customers to connect provider communities, coordinate care, and manage population health.
