A MarkLogic Case Study
Oxford University Press, one of the world’s largest academic publishers, faced mounting pressure to deliver many new niche online products built from diverse sources and formats. Until recently each site was a one-off project, which was slow, costly, and hard to scale; OUP needed a flexible, standards-based platform that could handle multiple DTDs and support both knowledge professionals (advanced search) and general users (simple search).
OUP implemented an XML-based publishing platform using MarkLogic Server, created a vendor-neutral API, and partnered with Interactive Factory to build the African American Studies Center as the pilot product. The platform allowed rapid content reuse and customization, produced a well-reviewed AASC launch, and is expected to cut future development time from about 10–12 months to 4–6 months while improving staff efficiency, reducing costs, and enabling new content types, vendors, and delivery channels.
