MarkLogic Helps Fairfax County Residents Become More Civic-minded

Fairfax County Department of Information Technology supports more than one million residents and needed to modernize its Police Events web app that exposes GIS-driven police service calls and preliminary 9‑1‑1 data. The county’s GIS contained over 800 distinct data layers and more than a half‑million data points with many schemas, which overwhelmed the legacy Oracle-based search (layer-by-layer, slow queries) and made adding new datasets and returning formats like JSON or KML difficult.

After evaluating NoSQL options, Fairfax implemented MarkLogic’s enterprise NoSQL platform for its geospatial indexing and unrestricted search across disparate sources. MarkLogic consolidated the data into a single repository, integrated with Esri, supported real‑time updates (100–200 daily calls), and cut query times from about 10 seconds to sub‑second (roughly 10x faster), boosting site usage, reliability, and eliminating routine support calls.
