HEROLD Business Data GmbH is a leading Austrian directory publisher (HEROLD.at and dozens of print directories) that maintains records for about 360,000 businesses and 3.6 million phone numbers. After acquiring a large directory business, HEROLD faced an aggressive timeline to monetize vast, complex datasets spread across roughly 15 disparate systems—its relational database could not handle the mix of structured and unstructured data (product info, reviews, photos) or support rapid productization.
Working with partner EBCONT, HEROLD deployed SmartLogic Ontology Manager and the MarkLogic NoSQL platform to consolidate all sources into a single, semantic-enabled repository and power three products (targeting/direct marketing, customer analytics, and hosted product search/fulfillment). The solution enabled the first product in six months, reduced infrastructure complexity and cost, improved data quality by ~20%, created new revenue streams and delivered a more reliable, searchable customer experience.
