Hannover Re Improves Business Insights and Customer Service by Using the MarkLogic Database

Hannover Re, the world’s third-largest reinsurer with around EUR 17 billion in gross premium and a global network of offices, needed a Management Information capability for its hr | ReFlex automated underwriting suite that could deliver a 360-degree view of client data. The challenge was to integrate massive, heterogeneous and often unstructured data (including health records and scanned documents), provide integrated structural and full-text search, minimize operational complexity, and meet strict security and regulatory requirements—limitations that ruled out traditional relational and many open-source solutions.

Hannover Re implemented the MarkLogic database as the cloud-based analytic layer for hr | ReFlex, ingesting data “as is” into a central SaaS data warehouse with universal indexing, integrated search, enterprise-grade security, and scalability. The result was real-time, drillable insights from aggregate trends down to individual details, reduced complexity and ETL needs, rapid deployment by existing staff, improved customer service and risk analysis, and a stronger competitive position.
