Fairfax County Increases Its Ability to Promote Open Government While Reducing Costs

Fairfax County, Virginia — one of the nation’s largest and most populous counties — struggled to respond to high volumes of constituent requests for property history, zoning and land‑use information that lived in disparate databases, file systems and formats. The county needed a way to integrate those sources, preserve data integrity, enable fast searchable access that fit its existing IT environment, and keep total cost of ownership low and predictable.

Fairfax implemented a land‑use data repository on MarkLogic’s Enterprise NoSQL platform, using its embedded search and application services to consolidate heterogeneous data (first phase completed in two months). The new system improved employee productivity, gave residents and developers real‑time online access, supported open‑government goals, reduced overall IT TCO, and earned a Government Computer News honorable mention for outstanding IT achievement.
