A MarkLogic Case Study
Herold Business Data GmbH, a leading Austrian publisher whose HEROLD.at site reaches over 23% of active internet users, sat on a large trove of data — 3.6 million phone numbers and records for 360,000 businesses — but could not monetize it after acquiring a directory business. Much of the information (reviews, photos, product details, descriptions) was unstructured and siloed across 15 separate systems, and traditional relational databases couldn’t integrate and serve the combined dataset efficiently.
Herold implemented MarkLogic’s Enterprise NoSQL platform to ingest and centralize the 15 systems into a single repository, cutting infrastructure complexity and accelerating development. Within six months it delivered a faster, more precise product search and a maintenance/fulfillment service that lets customers order products for delivery or in-store pickup, and has already identified nine potential monetization opportunities from the richer, unified data.
