BBC Delivers Real-Time, Customizable, and Interactive Content That Meets Customer Needs and Increases Revenue

The BBC needed to deliver real-time, customizable, and interactive content—most notably for BBC Sport’s 2012 Olympics coverage and BBC iPlayer—but its legacy relational systems were slowing publication, hampering innovation, and unable to scale for growing multi-device, personalized demand.

By moving to MarkLogic’s NoSQL platform in the cloud with an Operational Data Hub, the BBC dramatically cut query times (from ~20 seconds to ~200 milliseconds), made content available in minutes, and reduced its tech footprint. The results: iPlayer handled three billion requests in year one, Olympic services sustained 25,000 transactions/sec and 45 billion requests overall, served 2.8 PB in one peak day with zero downtime, lowered TCO, and won industry accolades.
