A Markforged Case Study
Nieka Systems, a Canadian laboratory equipment manufacturer serving mining and cement industries, needed durable components that could withstand rapid temperature cycling up to ~1000°C for their fusion instruments. After finding CNC machining cost-prohibitive and outsourced DMLS 3D printing too expensive and slow, Nieka Systems sought an in-house additive solution and evaluated Markforged’s offerings.
Nieka implemented the Markforged Metal X system plus two Markforged composite 3D printers to print Inconel 625 crucible clips and other production and tooling parts. With Markforged technology they adapted the design quickly, brought lead times down from weeks to four days (an 86% reduction), cut part cost roughly 10x, saved CAD $108,000 in the first year, and achieved an ROI in about 1.5 years, while standardizing the parts across global production.
