A Markforged Case Study
PUNCH Torino, a Torino‑based R&D and engineering facility in the automotive sector, faced a critical prototyping challenge: printing camshaft locking tools that must hold camshafts absolutely stationary under up to 120 Nm of torque. Using a Markforged X7 and Onyx with carbon‑fiber reinforcement, the team previously relied on trial‑and‑error prints and had no reliable way to predict stiffness and failure, causing repeated tool breakage and build delays.
By adopting Markforged’s Simulation software to validate designs, optimize print settings and carbon‑fiber placement, PUNCH Torino cut the average prototype iterations from eight to one (initially to three while dialing in settings), reduced total print time per tool from 144 to 18 hours, shortened development time from 3–4 weeks to about 1 week, and cut material costs from €1,400 to €200—saving roughly 18 hours of printing per jig and more than 50% of development time. Markforged’s solution also freed printer and engineering capacity and improved first‑pass part reliability.
