Haddington Dynamics cuts Dexter robot costs 58% with Markforged

Haddington Dynamics, a manufacturer of the Dexter 7-axis robotic arm, faced a challenge with the material strength of its product. A high-profile customer suggested moving away from weak PLA plastic to achieve greater durability. This led them to the vendor Markforged and its Onyx material with continuous carbon fiber reinforcement.

Using Markforged's 3D printing technology, Haddington Dynamics completely redesigned the robotic arm. The solution reduced the number of parts from 800 to less than 70 and saved 58% in costs. Markforged enabled the company to make almost the entire robot from 3D printed parts, with a single Dexter arm providing a full return on investment for one of their printers.
